Troubleshooting for Signia hearing aids

The hearing aid is not working at all

Try this first:

  • Turn the hearing aid off and on. For rechargeable hearing aids, this can be done by placing the hearing aid in the charger for 5 seconds and then taking the hearing aids back out. For hearing aids that use exchangeable batteries, open and close the battery doors to restart the hearing aid.

Let's try to narrow down the possibilities of a power issue or sound issue.

  • Are you able to hear the startup melody when powering on the hearing aids?
  • You can also check the status of the batteries from within the app to see if the hearing aids are starting up and connecting with the phone. If you use exchangeable batteries, try a new battery from a different pack if possible.

Many of Signia hearing aids have a wax guard near the speaker that protects against buildup. Replace it as soon as it looks clogged or as recommended by your hearing care professional.

How to change a waxguard on a Signia RIC hearing aid

Make sure your ears are not clogged with earwax. Your hearing care professional can inspect your ear canals to make sure they are clear of any earwax or obstruction that could prevent you from hearing the hearing aid output.

If the microphone openings of the hearing aids are clogged, this could prevent the hearing aid from receiving any sound, thereby muting any output. Use a cleaning brush, brush the microphone openings on the back/face/front of the hearing aid. These are usually tiny slits/openings near the buttons or battery door of the hearing aid.
Replace the battery with a fresh one. Double-check battery orientation. For Signia rechargeable hearing aids, LEDs on the charger should indicate the beginning of the charging cycle. If the LEDs do not light up or show an error light, check the charging contacts (gold dots), if applicable, on the hearing aids and charger. Proceed to clean them with a dry, soft cloth to ensure no buildup that would prevent the contacts from touching. If using a portable charger, try to plug the charging case into the outlet first and then put the hearing aids in the charging case to begin charging.
There could be an issue with the hearing aid’s hardware or with the accessories, such as the receiver. Consult your hearing care provider for further assistance.
It's possible the root cause is due to a Bluetooth connectivity issue. Please visit the Connectivity & pairing page for troubleshooting steps, including how to unpair and repair the hearing aids to your smartphone.

The sound from the hearing aid is distorted

Try this first:

  • Decrease the volume
  • Use a dehumidifier
  • Clean or exchange the ear piece
Try decreasing the volume manually or via the Signia app. High volume can sometimes cause sound distortion, especially in noisy environments.
Replace the battery or fully recharge your hearing aid. Low power can affect sound clarity.
Clean the ear piece carefully or replace any disposable parts like domes or wax guards.
If distortion continues, your hearing care professional may need to check for internal damage or calibration issues.

The hearing aid is making a whistling sound

Remove and reinsert the hearing aid or ear piece so it fits snugly and securely in your ear. A poor physical fit can lead to sound leaking out of the ear canal which will be reamplified by the hearing aid. This reamplification usually sounds like loud whistling (i.e. feedback).

Try lowering the volume. Excess amplification can cause the hearing aid to feedback on itself.

Clean the ear piece carefully or replace it if necessary. Make sure the wax guard is not blocked.

The hearing aid is not charging

Ensure the hearing aid charger is securely plugged into a working power outlet. Try a different socket or power source to rule out power issues.

Remove and reposition the hearing aid in the charging slot. You should see an indicator light turn on when it's charging correctly. For hearing aids with gold charging contacts, the contacts are magnetic and should 'click' into position when oriented properly

Gently clean the metal charging contacts on the hearing aid using a soft, dry cloth to remove any dust, wax, or residue.

Use a dry cloth or soft brush to clean the gold charging base/pins. Do not use liquids.

If the issue persists or the charger is showing error lights (check user guide for expected LED behavior), your charger or hearing aid may require professional inspection. Please bring the USB outlet adapter, charging cable, and charger along with your hearing aids to your hearing care provider for additional support.

If only one hearing aid is not charging and your charger is not side specific, you can try charging the functional hearing aid in the opposite charging slot. If that hearing aid charges in the opposite slot, chances are the issue resides with the non-charging hearing aid. Alternatively, you can charge the non-charging hearing aid in the opposite slot. If the hearing aid starts charging and the other hearing aid now doesn't charge in the other slot, the issue is with that charging slot specifically or the charger itself. Report these results to your hearing care provider if doing any of the above steps don't help.

More troubleshooting tips

Your hearing aids will automatically switch‑off when the power cell is empty. Charge the hearing aids as soon as possible.

Hearing aids which have not been charged for over 6 months may be damaged due to an unrecoverable deep-discharge of the power cell.

If the tones are occurring at a periodic nature, try charging the hearing aid for at least 30 minutes or change to a new battery. Afterwards, listen to the hearing aids again. If the same tone starts playing periodically, the next best thing is make an appointment to see the hearing care provider so they can diagnose if there is a hardware issue in the hearing aids. At the same time, they can demo the types of tones the hearing aids can play and if you are able to identify the one that is periodically playing, they can tell you what function that tone is associated with. Lastly, if your hearing aid as buttons, ensure those buttons are not sticking or being accidentally pressed during normal handling.
