“Just a few weeks into my first pregnancy, at age 35, I woke up one morning with no hearing in my right ear – it was totally gone.

I saw an ENT, who diagnosed emergent hearing loss and prescribed high-dose steroids. In 24 hours, my hearing returned, and I was able to taper the medication. This was great, because I was worried about their effect on my pregnancy. But a few months later, after I finished breastfeeding my son, Xavier, my right ear started to fade again. Allergies, hormonal changes and an autoimmune inner ear disease were all suspected.  I traveled around the country, seeking the advice of leading specialists. I tested negative for Meniere’s disease. I explored cochlear implants. No one has ever been able to tell me for sure what is wrong.

But I did know one thing: I didn’t want to take steroids any more – they were becoming less effective and they were making me gain weight. I felt miserable.

Making the right choice

A hearing device was the only solution for me. I really struggled unnecessarily about this. Being in my early 40s, I did not want to wear a hearing aid at a young age. Looking back, this attitude was silly because you can’t even notice it.

In the two months since I have had the Pure® Charge&Go, my only regret was waiting so long! I love not only how it works, but also that it matches the color of my skin tone. It fits securely when I work out. It has really become a part of me.

Hearing is especially important for my job, because I work in medical environments, like cath labs, with physicians and technicians who often wear masks, so reading their lips is not an option. If they are conducting a procedure, their back may be to you as well. Finally, I am often in rooms with X-ray equipment, which creates a lot of fan noise. This all makes for a triple whammy if you don’t have great hearing. The Pure Charge&Go has made my work life so much better.

Work is just the beginning

Now, so many other parts of my life are just easier. In car rides, on airplanes or in group social situations, like dinners in restaurants, I’d always have to strategically position myself according to my left ear and try to read lips. That would mean sometimes having to turn my back on other folks.

Also, I love the Bluetooth function! You can turn the volume up or down with just a few clicks on an iPhone. The app will even let you connect directly with your audiologist. That’s a game changer for me. As busy as I am, as a working mother and wife, I’m all about simplicity. And, to give credit to my audiologist, Dr. Hall is sweet and caring and easy to work with.

Back to hearing what matters most

I love not having to say “what” all the time. Sometimes people just get impatient after a while and say, “It’s okay, never mind.” I really am so excited to have my right ear back.

But more than all of these things, I love being able to hear my children. My sons, Xavier, 8, and Steele, 6, would often like to whisper in my ear, “Mommy, I want to tell you a secret,” and if you ask them to repeat, or go to your other side, the moment is often lost. There are those little moments with your children that you can’t get back, you can’t replay them. They grow up so fast and I don’t want to miss a single moment.
