How hearing aids work

Hearing aids capture sound waves and amplify specific frequencies to make sounds audible and clear. Speech understanding is improved, and you don't have to work as hard to listen to the world around you.

There are three basic steps involved to get sound from the outside world into your ear:

  • Sound capturing - One or two tiny but powerful microphones capture sound and translate it into electrical signals.
  • Sound processing - These signals are sent to the processor, where they are optimized according to the wearer’s hearing needs and the characteristics of the acoustic environment (such as loudness, contrast, and background noise).
  • Sound transmission - Following this customized processing, the electrical signals are then converted back into acoustic signals and delivered to the ear.
